Blaze Edged Out by Giants in Goalie Duel
The DPD Coventry Blaze threw everything they had at reigning Motorpoint Elite League champions Belfast Giants, but they were unable to find a way past netminder Jake Kupsky, suffering their first points dropped of the season in a narrow 0-1 defeat at the Skydome Arena on Saturday.
Belfast enjoyed the better of the opening period, with Coventry’s Evan Fitzpatrick called upon to make 18 saves, compared to just five at the opposite end. However, the chances that fell to the Blaze were significant, with Kupsky producing a superb desperation save to deny Jaxson Ezman before shutting down Colby MacArthur on a two-on-one break. Morten Jensen came closest to opening the scoring for the visitors, striking the post as the first period ended goalless.
The sides were more evenly matched in the second period, with Blaze defenceman Connor Russell producing an excellent defensive play to break up a dangerous three-on-one opportunity for the Giants. At the other end, Kupsky remained alert, tracking the puck well to turn aside a succession of Coventry efforts.
The deadlock was finally broken at 32:38 when Mason Klee sent an effort towards goal that was redirected past Fitzpatrick by Jake Gaudet to give Belfast the lead. The game grew increasingly physical as the period progressed, with heavy hits being exchanged before tensions boiled over into a late-period scrum between Coventry’s Andrew Neilson and Belfast’s Cole Shudra.
Matthew Gleason came alive in the third period, emerging as one of Coventry’s biggest attacking threats as the hosts pushed hard for an equaliser.
The Blaze earned a powerplay with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock, but Belfast successfully killed off the penalty to maintain their advantage. With 9:30 remaining, Coventry’s Griffin Ness and Belfast’s Mike Less became entangled at centre ice before dropping the gloves. Both players received five-minute penalties for fighting.
The Blaze were handed another opportunity to draw level on the powerplay with 9:18 left, but the Giants dug deep to kill off the penalty. Gleason continued to drive Coventry forward, helping earn yet another man advantage - their fourth of the third period - with 7:35 remaining.
Belfast once again held firm, before gaining some relief when Russell was penalised with just over five minutes to play. The Canadian emerged from the penalty box with a chance to break away but lost his footing and the opportunity slipped away.
With time running out, Coventry pulled Fitzpatrick in favour of an extra attacker and launched a final assault on the Belfast goal. The Blaze fired 18 shots on target in the third period alone, bringing the overall shot count level, but Kupsky remained unbeatable.
The Giants held on through the closing seconds to secure a hard-fought one-goal victory and hand Coventry their first dropped points of the regular season.
